General Questions

How do I get licensed to buy and sell real estate in Massachusetts? +

The first step to become licensed as a Real Estate Salesperson is to complete 40 hours of education at any one of the Board-approved real estate schools (Host Group is an approved MA Real Estate School - Code 1230). Host Group offers the 40-hour course in three formats: live classroom instruction, self-paced video course and the newly added Distance Learning program. After you complete your 40 hour course, you will then apply to the Real Estate Board for approval to sit for your Real Estate Licensing exam. Once approved, you will schedule your exam through PSI Testing Centers and will receive your license on the spot upon successfully passing the exam. You are then able to work under a licensed Broker and can begin real estate transactions.

What is the difference between the RE Salesperson and RE Broker Pre-licensing Courses? +

If you are just starting your career in Real Estate, you must first become a Real Estate Salesperson. After actively working under a licensed broker for 3+ years, you are then able to take the Real Estate Broker class if you so choose.

How much is the RE Salesperson Pre-Licensing Course and what does it include? +

The RE Salesperson Pre-licensing course is $249 for the live, distance learning and self-paced video course. This price includes the course and all supplemental materials (book, online access to practice quizzes and review material).

How long is the course? +

Each session is 40 hours and is broken up into four 10 hour days OR four 7 hour days with 12 hours of self-paced online coursework. The classes are held either consecutive weekends (Saturday, Sunday, Saturday and Sunday) or Thursday-Sunday.

Is parking available at the Boston location? +

We do not have private parking and recommend using public transportation. We are less than one block from The Orange Line Mass Ave. stop, Green Line (E Train) Prudential and Symphony stops, as well as stops for the #1/CT1, #39 and #55 bus routes. Area garages including the Christian Science Plaza Garage and Westland Avenue Garage do offer paid public parking. Please contact them directly to verify rates and availability.

Can I take the course online from home or do I have to be present in a classroom for my hours to count? +

Host Group has recently been approved to offer the RE Salesperson and RE Broker Pre-licensing courses in an Online Distance Learning Format. 70% of the course is completed via live-streaming during a live lecture and the other 30% is done at your own pace but the entire course can be completed from home.

I am a former student and missed the 2 year deadline to take the Salesperson exam. Do I have to retake the entire course? +

Yes. The state of Massachusetts requires that after a 2-year lapse, you must re-take the entire 40 hour course. We do offer a 50% discount for returning students who are re-taking the same class after the 2 year time limit. Please email us at for more information.

I've taken the class less than two years ago but have not taken the exam yet. Are there review materials for me to use for studying? +

You can purchase an online crash-course review here: or shoot us a message in the bubble below for an extension on your supplemental course materials. If available, you can also join in a live-streaming session for review at no charge.

I'm having trouble accessing my supplemental materials (Litmos or QBank) and/or the videos are not playing. What should I do? +

First, try logging out of your account and then back in. Next, try changing your web browser (we recommend using Google Chrome) and/or your device. If you are still experiencing difficulties, please contact so we can help you troubleshoot or refer you to online tech support.

Why is my progress still showing "incomplete" and has not turned green if I have already finished a module on Litmos? +

The videos on Litmos must run the ENTIRE length, including all of the credits at the end. If you stopped the video after the course content finished but did not allow the video to run the full length, that is the most likely cause of a completed module still being grey and showing "incomplete".

I'm already licensed in Massachusetts. Does my license extend to other states without taking their pre-licensing course and/or exam? +

As requirements vary by state and are regularly changing, you need to reach out to the state in question to find out if they have reciprocity with the MA Real Estate Board. We suggest an online search for "Board of Real Estate Licensing in [your state]" as a jumping off point in your research to find the appropriate government entity.

I'm already licensed in another state. Do I have to take the Massachusetts pre-licensing course and/or exam? +

The requirements for reciprocity incoming to MA vary by state. As of 2017, CT, RI, WV, NE, IA, TN, MS, CO, GA, NM & PA all have full reciprocity with MA for Salesperson and Brokers. NY, OK, NH & ME have some limitations. All other states have no incoming reciprocity with MA. Please see for additional and the most up to date information.

Do you have practice exams or a walkthrough of the exam that I can check out? +
